It is an immense pleasure to report that Shaikh Ayaz International Conference on Language and Literature held on January 10, 2007 organized by the Faculty of Arts, University of Sindh, Jamshoro came to a satisfactory conclusion as was scheduled.

           

A number of delegates from different parts of the country & abroad participated with their presentations in the conference. Professor Dr. K M Mohsin, a renowned historian from Bangladesh participated in the conference as a Keynote speaker in the Inaugural Session of the conference. The Inaugural session was presided over by Mr. Mazhrul Haq Siddiqui, Vice Chancellor, University of Sindh and Dr. Pirzada Syed Qasim Raza Siddiqui, Vice Chancellor Karachi University inaugurated the conference as the Chief Guest.

 

The Inaugural Session of the Conference   

Introduction

The Inaugural Session started with the recitation of Quranic verses followed by the conference song of Shaikh Ayaz performed by the famous singer Mazhar Hussain leading a group of the students of the University of Sindh.

The Chairman of the conference Prof. Dr. M. Qasim Bughio, in his welcome speech, spoke about the importance of the conference. He said that the primary task of the universities is to develop the culture of carrying out and sharing research and findings through such conferences. Dr. Bughio elaborated that, in the present global scenario, the role and importance of the disciplines of Arts and Humanities, like languages, literature, philosophy and history is to produce thinkers and leaders in a society. Research on important aspects of these disciplines will help us review the existing situation of our society and it will also assist us to do some good to ourselves, to our nations and to our coming generations.

Prof. K. M Mohsin, in his keynote speech, touched upon the old language riots between Pakistan and Bangladesh in 1952 and 1956. He concluded that it was because of the struggle and sacrifices of the people of Bangladesh for the due rights of their mother tongue, the United Nations declared 21st February as the International Mother Language Day.

Prof. Pirzada Syed Qasim Raza, in his speech, appreciated the efforts of organizing such a grand conference on language and literature in which more than 70 scholars around the country are presenting their papers. He pointed out that there is a unique similarity between Shaikh Ayaz and himself that both of them are said to be the poet Vice Chancellors. He spoke on the administration of Shaikh Ayaz as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Sindh. He concluded that we need scholars and intellectuals to run the academic institutions. He also spoke on the importance of carrying out research on the various aspects of language, linguistics and literature.

Mr. Mazhrul Haq Siddiqui, in his presidential speech, said that the University of Sindh is moving on the right track of shouldering the responsibility of imparting knowledge and also creating it by conducting research and then by sharing it with fellow scholars around the world. He assured that the organization of the conference will contribute to university’s academic endeavor in bringing out research papers by the learned scholars. Appreciating the organization of such a splendid conference, he pointed out that it was after a long time of 18 years the Arts Faculty has organized this conference.

The conference proceedings were divided into five sessions. Besides the Inaugural and the Concluding sessions, it was divided, theme wise, into three academic sessions namely: Language/Linguistics, Literature and Contributions of Shaikh Ayaz towards Language Literature, Education and Society. Since, we received a great number of papers, each session was divided into four to five panels.

 

Session II- Language/Linguistics was divided into four panels, conducted simultaneously in different rooms. In all the four panels 23 papers were presented on different topics and issues related to Sindhi, Urdu, Bengali and other languages including English and computer related language learning and teaching.

 

Session III- Literature was also divided into four panels, in which 22 papers were presented, whereas session IV- Contributions of Shaikh Ayaz towards Language, Literature, Education and Society was divided into five panels, in which 26 papers were presented.

 

The paper presenters were facilitated with Multimedia and white boards to present their papers effectively.

 

The Distinguished Guests

 

We received almost 100 papers through email and hard copies by post. All the papers were immediately sent to the Conference Paper Scrutiny Committee, which finally approved 86 papers for oral presentation. Few papers were sent back with a request to improve upon their themes, style and writing. Out of 86 approved papers, 9 belonged to foreign scholars who, except K M Mohsin from Bangladesh, due to shortage of time, could not manage to fly over to Pakistan to participate in the conference. 6 local scholars also, could not make it possible to present their papers.

 

Thus a total of 71 papers were presented in the thirteen panels of the three academic sessions of the conference. Each panel was presided over by a prominent scholar in the field in which papers were presented. The young teachers of the various institutes and departments of the Faculty of Arts were appointed as Panel Secretaries to conduct the panels. The Panel Secretaries submitted their reports in the concluding session.

 

Each scholar was given 20 minutes to present his/her paper and 10 minutes were allotted for question answer session as open forum. In most of the panels, the open forum started after all the speakers were done with their presentations but in some panels, questions were asked at the end of an individual’s presentation. All the panels came to their end with the winding up remarks from the respective panel chairs. We could hear a variety of ideas on the three given themes of the conference i.e. Language/Linguistics, Literature and the contribution of Shaikh Ayaz towards Language, Literature, Education and Society.

 

Concluding Session

In the Concluding session, a brief report of the conference was presented by the Secretary of the Conference, which was followed by a few resolutions i.e.: to name the main auditorium of the Faculty of Arts, University of Sindh after Shaikh Ayaz; all the languages of Pakistan be given due importance and funds should be provided for the development of these languages and merit regarding the national awards on languages and literature should be made the only criteria. All the resolutions were unanimously supported by the participants and the audience with clapping.

The Chairman of the conference, Prof. Dr. M. Qasim Bughio in his concluding speech, thanked all those who, in any way, supported the Organization of the conference to such a great level. He thanked the Institute of Modern Science and Arts for their support to arrange the refreshment, lunch and dinner for the participants of the conference. He thanked Hyderabad Chambers of Commerce and Industries for providing conference bags for the delegates of the conference. He thanked the Vice Chancellors of Karachi University and Isra University for their participation and best wishes for the conference.

He thanked all the delegates from various parts of the country for presenting their papers. He thanked the conveners and members of different committees who worked a lot to make the conference a success. He thanked the volunteers for their sincere and timely services to maintain the decorum and successful flow of the various sessions and panels of the conference. He specially thanked the Vice Chancellor University of Sindh and the university administration for their full support and patronage to organize the conference in the best possible manner.

He also thanked the HEC Web Administration, Sindh University Web Administration and the electronic and print media for their continuous efforts to publicize the conference event.

 

In the end he thanked honorable Dr. Ishrat ul Ibad, Governor/Chancellor and Prof. Dr. Hamida Khuhro, Minister for Education /Pro-Chancellor University of Sindh, Chairman, Higher Education Commission Prof. Dr. Atta-ur-Rehman for extending their encouraging and thought provoking messages at this occasion.

Besides the registered delegates, the conference was attended by a large number of people representing all walks of life. All the Deans and a great number of university faculty were among the participants to witness the conference proceedings. A good number of people related to media were there to record the proceedings of the day. A good number of the students of various departments also actively participated in question answer sessions and witness the proceedings of the conference.

 

The conference ended with cultural cum music program. The pupils of Dr. Nabi Bakhsh Baloch Model School, University of Sindh Hyderabad presented four tableaus on the selected poetry of Shaikh Ayaz. Renowned singers Hanif Lashari, Mazher Ali, Khadim Sakheerani and Balak Sindhi sang songs to entertain the audience.

The over all response regarding the organization of the conference remained more than expected. A number of scholars and educationists congratulated the organizers of the conference; especially the Chairman and the Secretary of the conference received many happy returns and wishes in the forms of letters, E-mails, SMS and face to face.

 

The local and national newspapers gave considerable coverage to various events of the conference. A number of articles, columns and letters were published in various newspapers applauding the conference events. There was a great demand from public to carry on the organization of such mega events to develop real academic atmosphere on the campuses of universities.

 

Follow Up

Resolutions passed in the concluding session were sent to the concern authorities for implementation. In this regard the resolution pertaining to University of Sindh to name the Arts Faculty Auditorium after the name of legend poet Shaikh Ayaz was unanimously approved by the syndicate vide resolution No.12 at its 160th meeting held on 28-04-2007. The Arts Faculty Building Auditorium is now called Shaikh Ayaz Auditorium.
