University of Sindh
Jamshoro, the site of the largest university residential campus in the country, situated about 18 kms from Hyderabad on the right bank of River Indus, was a rather desolate hilly track until 1955 when it was selected for the establishment of Sindh University Campus. The site was selected to be a university township away from the humdrum of Hyderabad city, which lacked room to meet the ambitious expansion program of the University, that was established in April 1947.
Interestingly, Jamshoro is virtually the gateway to the Indus Valley, now world famous for its civilization and rich cultural heritage. The Rani kot (the Fort of Ranni) is located 64 kms to the north of the campus, in the northward continuation of the same hilly track, which becomes Laki Rangers, merging with the Khirthars northwards. Amri, an important archeological site, lies about 15 kms. Further north, Sehwan, a well known township lies 25 kms to the north of Amri. Mancher Lake the largest fresh water lake in the region is situated to the north west of Sehwan. Traveling about 150 kms to North, through the Indus plains, brings one to the site of Mohen-Jo-Daro, the most important archeological discovery of the Valley.
University of Sindh is the second oldest university in Pakistan, established in 1947. University of Sindh imparts education and plays an important role in the socio-cultural, geo-political life of people of Sindh. It has opened its doors of knowledge to all the knowledge seekers of all corners of the country. It has attracted many overseas students from all over the world who are benefiting from its rich sources and most qualified faculties.
The University, because of its easy accessibility, thanks to the construction of Super Highway and Hyderabad Bypass, being about 150 kms. from Karachi and 18 kms. from Hyderabad, has been able to host a number of international and national conferences, seminars and workshops in different fields of Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences and Education. Some are listed as International Sindhi Literary Conference, International History Conference, International Botanical Conference, and ASEAN Conferences, Shaikh Ayaz International Conference on Language & Literature 2007.
Jamshoro city is situated on the right bank of mighty Indus River, which has a low lying mountains background and the university buildings constructed between small hills, rocks, trees, plants and bushes give the impression of an island. This unique city can be termed as the land of academics, technocrats and intellectuals which has Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, Mehran University of Engineering and Technology along with their mother institute, University of Sindh. Friendly, liberal and pollution free environment of Jamshoro exhibits non-violent atmosphere, without ethnic divide, and sectarian bigotry.
